The 2019 AGM, held at St.Mary's Church Hall, was well attended, with over 50 members present for the meeting. Draft Minutes will be circulated to members by the Secretary via email, but highlights included club President Brian Russell's announcement that over £800 had been raised in 2019 alone for his chosen charity Guide Dogs for the Blind. Club Men's Captain reported on a highly successful end-of-season tour in Portugal, and plans for one to take place in Spain in 2020. He also urged members - particularly the men - to take advantage of the coaching available in the club, in order to improve our league results. Chris Ballard stepped down as Treasurer after completing 11 years in the role, to warm applause from members.
The Pre-season Meeting will take place on Saturday 4 April 2020 starting at 10.30 in St.Mary's Church Hall, The Avenue, Worcester Park.
Once again, congratulations to the catering team who did us proud with an excellent feast. There was a vast amount and variety of food including turkey, beef, ham and prawns to go with salad, as well as cheese whirls, scotch eggs and French bread with and without pate or cream cheese. Heaped plates of selections of sandwiches were also available (enough to feed the five thousand), and this was then followed by a choice of Christmas pudding with custard, fruit salad with or without cream and mince pies. I mustn’t forget the wine which flowed freely. Wow, what a blow out!
A bumper raffle found a number of winners and I believe that everyone went home happy.
On a warm, sunny Sunday June 23rd, around 50 Auriol members and their guests were treated to a superb BBQ held at the club. The team manning the BBQs looked very professional, kitted out in chefs' hats courtesy of Carol Green, and produced food to match, accompanied by delicious salads and desserts provided by the club's catering team and other club members. Our thanks to all those involved in making the BBQ such a success, particularly the stalwarts on the catering team, and to Brian Gee for organising another of his brain-teasing quizzes.
The day was made extra special by the presence of Guide Dogs for the Blind Area Organiser Barry Martin, along with young guide dog user Glen and his dog Zia, as guests of club President Brian Russell. Thanks to the generosity of club members (plus an unknown number of 'wrong bias' fines!), Brian was able to present a cheque for £500 to Barry Martin, on behalf of the club, which was gratefully received.
President's Charity Drive success
Club President Brian Russell announced that a grand total of £340 was raised at the club drive held on Bank Holiday Monday in aid of his chosen charity Guide Dogs for the Blind. At a delicious cream tea held after the drive finished, Brian thanked the three dozen or so members and their guests for turning out on the Bank Holiday to help him raise much-needed funds for Guide Dogs for the Blind. He thanked the ladies Captain Rosemary Westcott and Vice-Captain Rosemary Wilman for organising the proceedings, and the catering team for providing the excellent tea. He paid tribute, too, to the ladies within the club and also to the non-playing wives and partners of members for the unstinting support they give to the club.
Greek & Steak Night
More than 30 club members enjoyed a Greek & Steak night, organised by Geoff Izzard, supported by catering team members. Although plate-throwing was ruled out (Elf'n'Safety), there was plenty of Greek music, and a great time was had by all. Very many thanks, Geoff.
